Crime Numbers
A closer look at reported Part I crimes in Kootenai County in 2018 shows that there were 3 murders, 59 rapes, 29 robberies, and 266 aggravated assaults. The county also recorded 430 burglaries, 2,011 larceny thefts, and 178 motor vehicle thefts in that year. The recent five-year crime trend for the county reveals that the only crime to record a higher incidence in 2018 compared to 2014 is rape (22.9%). In the same period, murder (25%), robbery (19.4%), aggravated assaults (13.9%), burglary (45.4%), larceny (30.6%), and motor vehicle thefts (28.5%) rates fell.
Criminal Records
The Idaho State Police (ISP) provides both name- and fingerprint-based criminal history checks for Kootenai County. The required fee for each check is $20 and an additional $1 plus 3% of the total cost when paying with a credit/debit card. To request a fingerprint-based criminal history check, download and complete the Fingerprint Criminal Background Check Form. Make sure to complete and include the payment authorization form when paying with a credit/debit card. Alternatively, enclose a cashier’s check for the appropriate fee. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office provides incident reports for events investigated by its officers. To request copies of an incident report, complete a Public Records Request form and email it to records@kcgov.us.
Other police departments in the county provide the incident reports for the city, borough, or town under their jurisdictions. The Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) of the ISP maintains a central sex offender registry for the State of Idaho. The registry contains information on all registered sex offenders living in each county in the state. Court records
Kootenai County’s primary trial court is the District Court. The District Court has original and general jurisdiction on all civil and criminal matters. The Court Clerk’s Office and the courtrooms 6 - 11 are located at the address above. While courtrooms 1 - 5 are located at the Old Courthouse at 501 North Government Way and Courtroom 12 is located at the Public Safety Building, 5500 North Government Way. Courtrooms 13 and 14 are located at the Juvenile Justice Building, 205 North 4th Street.
The Kootenai County Clerk of the District Court is the repository for all court records. To request certified copies of these records, visit the Office of the Clerk at the address provided above or complete the online request form on the county’s website. The public can view and print uncertified copies of Kootenai County from the Idaho iCourt Portal.
Vital Records
The Idaho Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics maintains Kootenai County divorce records filed from May 1947 to the present. Earlier records are available at the Kootenai District Court. Contact the Clerk of the District Court at the address provided above. The Bureau charges $16 for each computer-generated copy and $21 for a photocopy. To request a certified copy of a divorce record, complete the certificate request form, attach a photocopy of a valid ID, and a check or money order for the appropriate fee. It takes two to three weeks to complete a request. There is an option to expedite a request for an additional fee of $10 per request. When opting for this option, make sure to select ‘Rush Order’ on the application and include the additional fee on the check or money order.
The Idaho Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics also maintains Kootenai County marriage, birth, and death records. Birth and death records filed from July 1911 to the present and marriage records filed from May 1947 to the present are available at the Bureau. The requirements, fees, and process for requesting these records are the same as described above for obtaining a divorce record. Where and How to Find Property Records in Kootenai County?
The Kootenai County Recorder’s Office maintains records of all documents relating to real property in Kootenai County since 1881. It provides electronic access to documents from March 1989 to date. Interested persons can obtain copies of recorded documents by mail, in person, or by telephone. Requesters should fill out the request form and include payment. How to Look Up Kootenai County Property Records?
The Kootenai County Assessor’s Office provides property information for interested residents of the county. Property information is available online through the Kootenai County Parcel Information Search Application portal. The portal allows residents to conduct free property searches and provides information about ownership, assessed value, parcel number, short legal description, lot size, date, instrument number of the last transfer, traits of the buildings, photos and sketches. Users can carry out searches by address, parcel number, owner, current legal description, and AIN.
